The Lenovo ThinkPad T470s isn't revolutionary, but is a reliable and travel-friendly business laptop loaded with modern features and ports, making it a worthy upgrade to its predecessor. On the other hand, you can get spare main batteries for the T430s (or the Bay Battery in place of the DVD drive), but you can't change the cut-rate keyboard and trackpad of the T440s. Ivy Bridge isn't what I'd call outdated. For a 2 yo uarch it still packs a hefty punch. Hell I'd say the same for Sandy Bridge and even Arrandale. As already mentioned the focus has been battery life over performance gains, and unless you have something that'll load down the Haswell I'd say you're better off buying an IB and using the extra money for an SSD.

It should help you out a ton. The T440s is pretty mediocre in everything except the keyboard. I have the version with the 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM and all the other bells and whistles, and it doesn't really outperform my UX32 from last year. The sound quality, both speakers and, importantly, headphones (so they must've used quite a cheap audio chip), the boot time, even the clicker for trackpoint on the trackpad (isn't particularly responsive).

In the center portion of the screen, we measured a maximum brightness of 310 cd/m². Especially in the corners, the screen grows a little dimmer, pulling the average brightness level down to 282 cd/m². If you switch the screen to a completely black background and look closely at the display in a dark room, you will notice some screen bleeding along the right edge of the panel. This had no discernible negative impact on the display image during everyday use, however. At 0.38 cd/m², the black value is small enough to create a rich contrast ratio of 816:1. At the proper setting in the energy-saving profile, even in battery mode, the full display brightness is available.
